Sample Exam Question 1

In today's class we rewrote our first sample question of how the essay is going to look like on our Cambridge final test, with our teacher's comments we were able to perfect it, here is my final draft.

The extract from Agent Carter deals with a women "Betty" living her new life after her loss of her partner "Steve". She is treated differently by her coworkers, who believe she is still not ready to go out in the field after suffering from her lost making her feel left out and less. This clip specifically represents gender norms during the early periods of the 1900s.

The scene starts with a theme soundtrack with the opening of a short cartoon edit. This provides context to the audience on what the movie will be about, in this case action. It continues with a reverse cut where Betty and Steve are conversing and saying their last words to each other. Immediately it conveys a sad atmosphere to the people watching while also curiosity in what will happen next.

After a establishing camera shot is settled as the scene gets replaced with a shot showing the location and setting of where the rest of the scene will take place in Brooklyn, New York. This gives the audience an idea of the geographic in a city with a lot of noise, movement, and people. In the office, where Betty works, we see a mid-shot as she speaks to her boss to be able to go out in the field again. This shows to the audience and contributes to the theme by showing her feelings of being discriminated for being a woman, this coneys how gender norms during this period were still seen.

Later, as she opens the cabinet in her office, it shows an eyeline match of what she is looking at, a picture of Steve, while playing discordant music to show how she feels when looking at the picture. Throughout the clip there is chiaroscuro and low-key lighting, never bright. This shows the events and people in the whole extract convey sad and suffering because there is a lot of black color. At the end, we hear incidental music coming from the police radio reporting an incident.
