Analyzing Technical Elements of Film
I chose to comment on a few of the technical elements in the 1996 movie "Scream" because I enjoy watching movies with suspension. This movie fits into the horror category, and as most "scary" movies, throughout it all there is multiple used of different angles, movements, and sound to evoke feeling to the audience, in this case fear.
The movie opens with a close-up to the main character Casey's face while she is answering the phone call, this captures the character's fear and emotion, making the audience feel her anxiety. A little after, the next scene uses a tracking movement to follow the character while she is cooking and doing other things as well, this scene follows the character-building suspense as the audience anticipates what might happen next. With this scene the use of diegetic sound like how the phone keeps ringing and silence are used to build suspense and develops the impact of sudden noises, making scares more effective. Another angle used in this clip is wide shot, this shows the isolation of the character alone in the house, enhancing the feeling of loneliness and anxiety. At end of the clip, there is a use of point of view from the character as she is scared looking out the window because she hears a noise. This perspective puts the audience directly into the shoes of the character, making them feel as if they are experiencing the horror themselves which evokes the feeling of fear. The use of all of these elements can control the overall setting and tension, making the horror experience more effective and interesting.
